Strange Things
Royal families have many ways of dealing with unpleasantness. In most cases, it seems, silence seems to be the preferred policy. It certainly was in the case of two of the nieces of the Queen Mum, both of whom were born mentally impaired. Though Burke's peerage had listed the elder daughter Nerissa as having died in 1966, her actual death did not occur until 1986, having spent most of her life locked away in an institution. Her sister Katherine was treated the same way and is reportedly currently living in a private facility in Surrey. The parents of the girls were John Herbert Bowes-Lyon, brother of the Queen Mum, and Fenella Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefuis. Fenella's sister Harriet also had daughters who were born with similar problems and had similar treatments.|
